A healthy smile is not only about bright teeth but, above all, about their stable foundation. Periodontology is the branch of dentistry concerned with the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth, helping protect you against tooth loss and painful inflammation of the gums and bone.
The periodontium is a complex system of tissues comprising the gums, periodontal ligament, root cementum and alveolar bone. It can be compared to a shock absorber that holds each tooth securely in the bone and protects it against harmful external factors. As specialists at Warsaw Dental Academy, we emphasise that even the healthiest tooth can be lost if its surrounding tissues are damaged by conditions such as chronic periodontitis.
The main causes of periodontal disease are bacterial plaque and tartar. When daily oral hygiene is neglected – for example, by failing to floss or attend regular scaling appointments – bacteria begin to colonise the areas beneath the gum line, causing inflammation. Periodontal health is also affected by systemic factors, including hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause, stress and smoking. Poorly fitted prosthetic restorations may also irritate the delicate gum tissue.
Periodontitis is an advanced inflammatory disease of the tissues supporting the teeth. The statistics are alarming – nearly 70% of people in Poland are affected by some form of periodontal disease. The first warning sign is usually bleeding gums during brushing. If you notice redness, swelling, exposed tooth roots or persistent bad breath, your periodontium may require immediate attention from a periodontist.
Periodontal treatment is tailored to the severity of each patient’s condition. In the initial stages, we focus on non-surgical methods such as professional scaling and root planing to clean the periodontal pockets. In more advanced cases, our surgeons perform precise regenerative procedures designed to rebuild lost bone and soft tissue. Consistency and close cooperation between the patient and dentist are essential to achieving successful results.
Prevention is the most effective defence against periodontitis. Periodontology places great emphasis on correct brushing and flossing techniques. At our clinic in Bemowo, we will show you how to care for your oral hygiene and remove plaque effectively. Regular professional hygiene appointments every six months are also essential – they are the simplest way to reduce the risk of requiring complex treatment in the future.
If your gums are sensitive or bleed, or if you have noticed that your teeth are becoming less stable, do not delay seeking help. At Warsaw Dental Academy, we provide comprehensive periodontal care based on medical evidence and delivered with empathy. Our experienced dentists will help restore the health of your gums, ensuring lasting comfort and confidence in your smile.
Is periodontitis contagious? The bacteria associated with periodontitis may be transmitted between members of the same household, for example through shared cutlery or kissing. However, transmission alone does not mean that another person will necessarily develop the disease, as individual risk factors and oral hygiene also play important roles.
Do exposed tooth roots always indicate periodontitis? Not necessarily. They may result from brushing too forcefully or from bite problems, but they should always be assessed by a periodontist.
Is periodontal treatment painful? We perform procedures at our clinic under local anaesthesia whenever required, ensuring maximum comfort and minimising pain.
