Fear of visiting the dentist, known as dental phobia, affects many patients regardless of age. At Warsaw Dental Academy in Bemowo, we believe that dental treatment can be completely stress-free. That is why we offer inhalation sedation – a safe method that helps you feel calm and relaxed in the dental chair.
Sedation is a professional solution designed to place the patient in a state of deep relaxation using safe medication. Unlike general anaesthesia, the patient remains conscious, can communicate with the dentist and retains all natural reflexes. One of its main advantages is that it increases the pain threshold – sensations that previously caused anxiety become neutral and far less significant.
At our clinic, we select the method of sedation individually according to each patient’s needs. We offer two primary solutions:
It is one of the most convenient methods of managing dental anxiety. Laughing gas takes effect almost immediately, while the dentist can precisely control the dose throughout the appointment. The patient experiences a pleasant sense of light-headedness and calm, allowing even lengthy procedures to be performed efficiently. Importantly, once the gas supply is stopped, it is eliminated from the body very quickly, and the patient regains full awareness and coordination shortly afterwards.
Inhalation sedation is an ideal solution for people who:
Despite its excellent safety profile, there are certain situations in which we cannot use this method. The main contraindications include:
Proper preparation is essential for safety. We ask patients to avoid eating for two hours before the procedure. During the appointment, we place a special, often scented mask over the nose. It may have a strawberry or bubble-gum fragrance, and the gas mixture flows through it. The patient relaxes while we take care of their dental health. After the procedure, the patient remains under our observation for approximately 15–30 minutes.
Absolutely not! General anaesthesia is a state of deep sleep in which the patient is completely unconscious. Inhalation sedation produces only a mild sedative effect – the patient can hear the dentist’s instructions, answer questions and remains in control of their body. It places significantly less strain on the body and can even be used during simple filling procedures.
For young patients, visiting the dentist can be a stressful experience. Inhalation sedation helps children feel safe and makes the time spent in the dental office seem to pass much more quickly. We have observed that children who regularly use this method gradually become accustomed to the dental environment and, after several years, may be able to cooperate with the dentist without additional support from laughing gas.
At Warsaw Dental Academy, every sedation procedure is preceded by a thorough medical assessment. Our team continually monitors the patient’s condition, ensuring their psychological and physical comfort. We want every visit to our clinic to be associated with professionalism rather than fear.
