Pregnancy is a unique time when caring for your oral health becomes a priority not only for the expectant mother but also for her developing baby. At Warsaw Dental Academy, we provide safe dental treatment during pregnancy, helping eliminate sources of inflammation that could adversely affect this special period.
During pregnancy, the body undergoes significant hormonal changes that directly affect the teeth and gums. We often observe reduced saliva production and a lower salivary pH, which weaken the enamel’s natural protection. Changes in eating habits and more frequent consumption of carbohydrates may also accelerate the development of caries disease. This makes increased vigilance and regular dental check-ups particularly important.
The term may sound complicated, but its purpose is simple: to protect the child before birth. Effective preventive care during pregnancy may help delay the colonisation of the newborn’s mouth by bacteria associated with tooth decay. This can significantly reduce the child’s risk of developing early childhood caries (ECC). A mother’s healthy smile is one of the best gifts she can give her baby from the very beginning.
The first three months are a period of intensive foetal development, so we primarily recommend preventive care at this stage. One important procedure is professional dental hygiene treatment, including scaling and air polishing, which removes tartar and bacterial deposits. However, if you experience sudden pain, do not delay seeking help. Untreated inflammation and the resulting stress may present a greater risk than necessary dental treatment.
From a medical perspective, the second trimester is generally considered the most suitable time for procedures that can safely be postponed until then. At this stage, we can perform tooth decay treatment and, when necessary, root canal treatment or minor surgical procedures. We use appropriately selected local anaesthesia to eliminate pain and stress, ensuring the expectant mother remains comfortable throughout the appointment.
During the final months before birth, we take additional precautions. Appointments should be relatively short to reduce the risk of supine hypotensive syndrome, which may occur when a pregnant patient lies flat on her back for too long. We focus primarily on urgent treatment designed to prevent pain and infection before delivery. The patient’s comfort and well-being remain our priorities.
Scientific research indicates an association between advanced periodontal disease and an increased risk of premature birth or low birth weight. Bacteria and inflammation originating in the mouth may affect the mother’s overall health. Maintaining good oral health and treating active infections are therefore important elements of comprehensive prenatal care.
